DIY Cold & Flu Tea
This cold & flu blend is the next best thing to having your mom take care of you when you’re sick. Perfect for cold rainy days or as an invigorating morning drink, try this recipe the next time your immune system needs a boost!
Chamomile is a gentle sedative herb with antimicrobial, and anti-spasmodic properties. The constituents in chamomile act to stimulate the production of white blood cells that destroy bacteria, fungi and viruses. As a powerful anti-inflammatory herb, it is useful in the treatment of almost any condition.
Ginger is a stimulating tonic for the digestive system helping to reduce nausea, cramping and bloating. This herb is also a warming peripheral circulatory stimulant that helps to rid the body of toxins associated with infection.
Lemon is high in vitamin C to help keep your immune system strong. As an alkaline fruit, lemon works to neutralize free radicals in your body, which are produced in higher quantities when you’re sick.
Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, antioxidants and fiber. With their sweet citrus flavor, this fruit will give you the boost of nutrients you need when you’re sick.
Honey can help soothe a sore throat and relieve cough. It’s natural sweetness helps to balance the lemon and ginger’s tartness and spice, giving the tea its soothing flavor.
Cayenne is a warming spice that stimulates mucous membranes in the nose and sinuses to help relieve congestion. Its potent diaphoretic properties make it an excellent choice for fever, infection and general cleansing.
How To Make Your Tea:
- 1 cup water
- 1 chamomile tea bag
- 1 inch freshly peeled & grated ginger
- ¼ lemon wedge
- ¼ cup freshly squeezed orange juice or orange concentrate
- 1 tsp honey
- ¼ tsp cayenne
- In a medium sized pot, bring water to a boil, reduce heat to simmer
- Add lemon, orange juice, chamomile & ginger to water, simmer with lid on for 10 minutes
- Strain the liquid into your favorite tea mug, add honey, cayenne, stir, and enjoy!
